Dizziness is very common and is usually temporary and not serious. The causes range from getting up too quickly to having a stroke (very rare). There may be different sensations including floating and spinning.
Dizziness may be accompanied by many other symptoms including deafness, ringing in the ears, nausea, vomiting, headaches etc. The part of the body that is not functioning correctly can be the ear, the brain or the whole body.
The aim of the Doctor is to identify easily treatable conditions e.g. low blood pressure or to exclude serious disease.
