A simple release under local or general anesthetic can be done as early as a few months of age. Older children require slightly bigger surgery under anesthetic where the adhesion is released and a small suture placed. Conservative speech therapy is also important with tongue exercises to strengthen the musculature. One must also be aware of a top lip adhesion which can also accompany a tongue tie. This is also released as it may interfere with teeth development.
