First aid management is started with direct pressure being applied on both sides of the nose towards the tip, effectively blocking the nose. This is done for approximately 10 minutes.

This squeezes the vessels closed on the septum allowing clotting to occur. The head is held forwards (not backwards) with this squeezing, elbow on the knee. Ice is not applied to the forehead or back of neck.

Curative – if bleeding continues the vessels will need to be cauterized. This is done with chemical cautery (silver nitrate} under local anaesthetic. This is relatively painless leaving a scab which heals in about ten days.
