Why was this necessary?

How long will they stay in for?

Your child required grommets for two main reasons. The first was for repeated middle ear infections and the second one was for hearing loss as a result of fluid not draining down the Eustachian tube from the middle ear.

Medical management often does not resolve the above two scenarios. The grommet functions to ventilate the middle ear and to allow excess middle ear drainage to the exterior. The grommets are extruded from the eardrum usually after six to nine months.
